Todos Santos in September (2027): Weather, Hurricanes, Closures & Things to Do

Todos Santos in September is the town at its most local and least predictable. It's hot and humid, it rains more than in any other month, and it's the heart of hurricane season. Many businesses take their annual break, so the galleries and restaurants that define a Todos Santos trip in winter may simply be closed.

The trade-off is the ocean and the quiet. The Pacific is at its warmest, around 28°C, and you'll often have the beaches to yourself. We'd only book September if you're a flexible, weather-tolerant traveller, ideally a surfer or someone returning to a town you already know, and if you can cancel or change dates without penalty. For a first visit, we'd lean toward almost any other month; late October and November bring the same warm water with far lower storm risk and the town waking up again.

Most people don't realize how much of Todos Santos closes in September. The low-season closures that start in July peak this month, when most businesses shut for their annual break. The practical effect is that a September visit is closer to a quiet beach retreat than a gallery-and-restaurant trip.

Temperature and Humidity

September highs average about 32°C (90°F), with lows around 23°C (74°F), essentially matching August as the hottest part of the year. Humidity stays high. The Pacific breeze keeps Todos Santos a little more comfortable than La Paz, where September highs run around 35°C, but air conditioning is essential.

Rain Pattern

September is the wettest month of the year, averaging about 60 mm of rain over roughly five days. Much of it falls in heavy thunderstorms or from passing tropical systems, and a single storm can deliver a large share of the month's total. Mornings are often sunny, with storms building later in the day. After the rains, the desert around town turns briefly green.

Sea and Outdoor Conditions

The Pacific is at its warmest in September, averaging about 28°C (82°F) and ranging from roughly 27°C to 30°C (80–85°F). Summer swells continue, and storms offshore can send large, dangerous surf to every beach on this coast with little warning. Costa Azul on the Cabo side remains the more consistent summer surf spot; Cerritos works best on a west-southwest swell according to Surf-Forecast.

September vs August and October

September is the quietest month of the year in Todos Santos. Very few visitors come, and many locals and business owners take their own break.

• September 6 (Monday): US Labor Day. Makes little difference in Todos Santos this late in the season.
• September 15–16: Mexican Independence Day. The night of Wednesday, September 15, 2027, brings the Grito de Dolores celebration in the town plaza, followed by the national holiday on Thursday the 16th. It's the liveliest date of the month.
• The rest of the month: empty beaches, quiet streets, and closed doors.

What's Open

Many restaurants, galleries, and shops close for their annual break in September, and some hotels close or run reduced operations. Basic services, grocery stores, and some cafés and taquerías stay open. Our take: before booking, confirm directly that your hotel is open and that the few places you most want to visit will be too.

Prices

When we sampled room-only rates in September 2026 for September 2027, boutique hotels in and around town came in around $225–300 per night across the month, with luxury resorts at roughly $470 to $1,030. Rates were essentially flat, even over Independence week. Only 9 of the roughly 95 properties listed by our booking partner returned rates, which fits a month when many properties close. If there's one reason to be in Todos Santos in September, it's the ocean. At around 28°C (82°F), the Pacific is as warm as it gets all year, and on calm days between weather systems, the beaches are empty.

Where to Swim

• Playa Los Cerritos (about 15 minutes south): the best swimming beach near Todos Santos, with warm water and a sheltered point. Swim only on calm, storm-free days, and get out if the swell picks up.
• Playa Las Palmas (San Pedrito): can be calm on small days; check conditions carefully.
• Punta Lobos, La Cachora, La Pastora, and the long beaches near town: dangerous shore break and currents at any time, and potentially deadly in storm swell. Don't swim here.

Surfing in September

September combines warm water with summer swells and storm-generated waves. Experienced surfers can find excellent sessions, but storm swell is powerful and unpredictable. The Sea of Cortez

The Cortez side is even warmer, around 30°C near La Paz according to our La Paz in September guide. September is also when the Espíritu Santo sea lion colony starts reopening after the summer pupping closure, often from later in the month, so a warm-water sea lion snorkel may be possible again; see our Isla Espíritu Santo tours guide.

September is the month to take storm season most seriously. The eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from May 15 to November 30, with the peak from July to September according to NOAA's Climate.gov, and Climates to Travel identifies September as the month when hurricanes affecting the Baja peninsula are most frequent.

The southern tip of Baja has been hit hard in September before. Hurricane Odile made landfall just east of Cabo San Lucas on September 14–15, 2014, as a Category 3 storm, and the National Hurricane Center's report describes it as tied for the strongest landfalling hurricane in Baja California in the historical record. Direct hits like that are rare, but they are why September planning needs a safety margin.

What a Storm Means in Practice

• Distant storms: the most common effect, bringing huge surf, humidity, and a day or two of heavy rain. Beaches become unsafe and boat tours are cancelled.
• Closer approaches: heavy rain floods arroyos and can close roads, including Highway 19, and cut power for a time.
• Direct hits: uncommon in any given week, but capable of shutting down the region's airport, roads, and services for days.

How to Plan

We think the tradeoff only works with full flexibility. Book refundable rooms, free-cancellation tours, and flights you can change; buy travel insurance that covers hurricanes; follow the National Hurricane Center's eastern Pacific outlook from a week out; and if a storm is forecast to approach, change your plans early rather than waiting it out.

What we'd prioritise in September

Plan around the weather, not the calendar. We'd book this for the first clear, calm morning: a Cabo snorkel cruise in the warmest water of the year, or an early swim at Cerritos. On stormy days, rest, read, and watch the swell from a safe distance.

• Storm-watching from Punta Lobos: when a distant system sends big swell, the bluff above Punta Lobos is a dramatic place to watch, well back from the water.
• Sunset horseback ride: on calm evenings, a ride along the beach is the most comfortable way to be outdoors.

• Make everything changeable. Refundable rooms, free-cancellation tours, flexible flights, and travel insurance that covers hurricanes.
• Watch the National Hurricane Center. Check the eastern Pacific outlook from a week before you travel and daily while you're there.
• Confirm what's open. Many restaurants, galleries, and some hotels close in September; check directly before booking.
• Leave buffer days. Storms can close roads, cancel tours, and delay flights.
• Get air conditioning and a backup. Heat and humidity are high, and storms can cut power; a flashlight and water are sensible.
• Swim only on calm days at Cerritos. Storm swell can arrive fast and turn any beach deadly.
• Never cross flooded roads or arroyos. They can rise quickly after heavy rain.
• Plan around September 15. The Independence Day Grito is the month's best evening out.
