Todos Santos in August is the town in deep summer. Highs average around 32°C (90°F), nights stay warm and humid, and short, heavy summer storms roll through a few times a month. It's still more comfortable than La Paz, where highs reach around 36°C, but this is the least temperate month of the year on the Pacific side.

What August gives in return is warm water, empty beaches, and a very quiet, local town. We'd lean toward August only for flexible travellers who want warm-water surf and swims at Cerritos, don't mind the heat, and are comfortable with storm-season uncertainty. We'd only book August if you can move your dates or cancel without penalty; otherwise, June offers far milder weather at similar prices.

Most people don't realize that the biggest risk in an August trip isn't a direct hurricane hit, which is uncommon in any given week, but disruption: a distant storm can still bring dangerous surf, heavy rain, road closures, and cancelled tours for a day or two. What typically happens is that visitors with refundable bookings and a spare day or two barely notice, while tight itineraries get squeezed.

Temperature and Humidity

August is the hottest month in Todos Santos, with highs averaging about 32°C (90°F) and lows around 23°C (74°F). Humidity is high, which makes it feel hotter than the number suggests. The Pacific breeze helps in the afternoons, but the cooling current that moderates the rest of the year is at its weakest. The biggest difference from June is the nights: in June they're comfortable, while in August air conditioning is a must.

Rain Pattern

August averages about 45 mm of rain over roughly three days. Most falls in short, heavy thunderstorms or in bands from passing tropical systems, rather than as steady rain. Sunshine averages about seven hours a day, with afternoon clouds common.

Sea and Outdoor Conditions

The Pacific averages about 27°C (80°F) in August, ranging from roughly 24°C to 29°C (76–82°F), one of the warmest months of the year. South swells bring summer surf, and passing storms can generate much bigger, more dangerous waves. Cerritos works best on a west-southwest swell according to Surf-Forecast, and Costa Azul on the Cabo side is the more consistent summer break.

August vs July and September

August is deep low season. There are no major holidays in Todos Santos, and the month changes little from start to finish.

• August 1–14: summer holidays, lower storm odds. Mexican families on school holidays visit the beaches, especially at weekends, and the storm window is only just opening. This is the best half of the month.
• August 15–31: the quietest stretch. Domestic visitors thin out as the school year approaches, and storm odds keep rising toward September.

When we sampled room-only rates in September for August 2027, boutique hotels in and around town came in around $225–310 per night across early, mid, and late August, and luxury resorts ran roughly $470 to $1,030, among the lowest top-end rates of the year. Only 9 of the roughly 95 properties listed by our booking partner returned rates for each set of dates; some may not have released August rates, and others may be closed for summer. Some restaurants, galleries, and shops in town close or reduce hours through the summer, with the most closures in September. August is when storm season starts to matter for planning. The eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from May 15 to November 30, with the peak from July to September according to NOAA's Climate.gov. For the Baja peninsula itself, Climates to Travel puts the higher probability of impacts from August to October, with September the most frequent month.

What a Storm Means in Practice

• Distant storms: the most common August effect is a system passing offshore, bringing big, dangerous surf, humidity, and a day or two of rain. Beaches become unsafe and boat tours may be cancelled.
• Closer approaches: heavier rain can flood arroyos and briefly close roads, including Highway 19 between Todos Santos and Cabo San Lucas. Follow local authorities and don't cross flooded dips.
• Direct hits: rare in any given week, but they do happen in southern Baja; they are the reason travel insurance and refundable bookings matter.

How to Plan an August Trip

We think the tradeoff is worth it only with flexibility built in. Book refundable rooms and free-cancellation tours, buy travel insurance that covers weather, check the forecast from the National Hurricane Center in the week before you travel, and leave a spare day at the end of the trip. If a system is forecast to approach, it's better to move your dates than to ride it out.

For all its heat and uncertainty, August has one standout advantage: the warmest water of the summer so far, on both coasts.

Where to Swim

• Playa Los Cerritos (about 15 minutes south): the best swimming beach near Todos Santos, with warm water and a sheltered point. Swim only on calm days; storm swell changes it quickly.
• Playa Las Palmas (San Pedrito): can be calm enough for a dip on small days; check conditions first.
• Punta Lobos, La Cachora, La Pastora, and the long beaches near town: strong shore break and currents at the best of times, and extremely dangerous in storm swell. Walk, don't swim.

Surfing in August

Summer south swells and warm water make August appealing for surfers, and passing storms can deliver powerful waves. The Sea of Cortez

The Cortez side is warmer still, around 29°C near La Paz according to our La Paz in August guide, and usually calmer, making a Cabo snorkel cruise or Playa Balandra the best clear-water options between weather systems.

What we'd prioritise in August

Build the trip around the water and the clock. We'd book this for the first calm, storm-free morning: a Cabo snorkel cruise, which is the most comfortable way to spend a hot day. On other mornings, swim or surf at Cerritos early, then take shelter from the midday heat.

Leave town exploring and sunset walks for the evening, and check which galleries and restaurants are open before you set out. If you want one desert experience, the Migriño ATV trails on Highway 19 are the closest; take the first departure. • Watch the forecast. Check the National Hurricane Center's eastern Pacific outlook in the week before you travel and daily while you're there.
• Leave a spare day. Storms can cancel tours and briefly close roads; a buffer day protects your flight home.
• Get air conditioning. August nights around 23°C with high humidity make it essential.
• Swim at Cerritos only on calm days. Storm swell can arrive quickly and turn any beach dangerous.
• Don't cross flooded roads. Arroyos and dips can flood fast in heavy rain, including on Highway 19.
• Check opening hours. Some restaurants and galleries close or reduce hours through summer.
• Hydrate and use sun protection. Heat and humidity are at their peak.
