Los Islotes

The small rocky islets off the northern tip of Isla Espiritu Santo are home to the largest sea lion colony in the Sea of Cortez, with 600–800+ California sea lions. From our own time in the water at Los Islotes: the pups are playful and will nip, but it doesn't hurt if you close your fist the way you would with a puppy. Don't let it spook you. The bigger male sea lions are less interested in you than you are in them; give them space, stay away from the rocks and the breeding areas, and they'll leave you alone. If you're not a confident swimmer, wear a life jacket; it helps more than most people expect and there's no reason not to. One thing we didn't anticipate: if there are scuba divers in the water below you, watch the pups. They go absolutely wild chasing the bubbles rising from the divers' regulators, and watching that from the surface is one of the more entertaining things you'll see all day. We'd go on a weekday if you can manage it. The site gets busy with other snorkel tours and dive groups, and most follow the same route through a channel that can back up when multiple tours arrive at once. The current carries you through, so the swimming is easy, but a smaller crowd makes the whole experience more memorable.

Playa Ensenada Grande

On adjacent Isla Partida, Ensenada Grande is a crescent-shaped bay with white sand, turquoise water, and dramatic cliff walls on both sides. Most tours use it as the main lunch and swim stop. No services on the beach; everything comes from the tour boat.

San Gabriel Bay
