Todos Santos in February (2027): Weather, Whales, Surf & Things to Do

Todos Santos in February is whale season at full strength on Baja's Pacific coast. The weather is almost identical to January, dry and sunny with warm afternoons and cool nights, but the whales are the story now. From the bluff at Punta Lobos or a beach chair at La Pastora, humpback spouts and breaches offshore are a regular sight on clear mornings, and an hour south, Cabo's whale cruises are in their best month for close encounters.

The trade-off is the water. February brings some of the coldest Pacific temperatures of the year, and most local beaches are too rough for swimming anyway. We'd lean toward February for wildlife lovers, surfers comfortable in a wetsuit, and couples who want galleries, sunsets, and long dinners rather than pool days. We'd only steer you elsewhere if warm-water swimming is the priority; in that case, the Sea of Cortez side around Cabo San Lucas or La Paz is the better base, with Todos Santos as a day trip.

Most people don't realize February is often slightly pricier than January here, not cheaper. In our rate sample, several of the same boutique hotels cost more in February, some by 10–20%, while availability stayed just as thin. If your dates can flex between the two months, late January gets you nearly the same whale season for less.

Temperature and Humidity

February mirrors January almost exactly on land. Daytime highs average about 25°C (77°F) with plenty of sunshine, around eight hours a day, and the dry desert air keeps afternoons comfortable for walking the town, hiking the coast, or sitting on a beach. Nights are the coolest of the year alongside January, averaging about 12°C (54°F), and a breezy evening on the coast feels colder than the number suggests. The biggest difference from the summer months is how usable the whole day is: you can hike at noon in February without the heat that makes summer afternoons a write-off.

Rain Pattern

February is one of the driest months of the year, averaging only about 5 mm of rain, usually on a single day or none at all. Skies are reliably clear. The main weather variable is a morning marine layer on some days, a band of low cloud or haze that usually clears by late morning.

Sea and Outdoor Conditions

February is one of the two coldest months for the Pacific here, second only to March. Sea temperatures average around 19°C (66°F), ranging from roughly 17°C to 21°C (63–70°F), a notch below January. Winter northwest swells keep arriving, which keeps Cerritos and San Pedrito surfable, but the shore break at the town beaches stays powerful. What typically happens is that mornings are glassy and calm, and a northwest breeze builds after midday, so the best surf, whale-spotting, and beach walks all come early.

February vs January and March

February is steady high season in Todos Santos. The town is full of winter residents, galleries and restaurants run their full schedules, and Cabo day-trip vans arrive every lunchtime. Four dates shape the month more than anything else.

• February 1–9: long weekend and Carnaval. Mexico's Constitution Day holiday falls on Monday, February 1, 2027, making a long weekend for domestic travellers, and Carnaval La Paz runs February 4–9, 2027 on the La Paz malecón, an hour north. Todos Santos itself stays relatively calm, but La Paz hotels fill, which can push overflow south.
• February 13–15: Valentine's and Presidents' Day. Valentine's Day falls on Sunday, February 14, 2027, and the US Presidents' Day holiday follows on Monday the 15th. This is the busiest weekend of the month: book restaurants for the 14th well ahead.
• February 16–28: the sweet spot. The holiday wave passes, whales are still at their seasonal peak, and spring break has not arrived. Our take: this is the window to aim for if your dates flex.

When we sampled room-only rates in September for February 2027, boutique hotels in and around town came in around $225–345 per night in early February and around Presidents' Day weekend, with one property climbing to about $400 in late February, and the high-end resorts ranged from roughly $690 to $1,420. Interestingly, the Presidents' Day weekend sample was no pricier than early February, but only 11 to 13 of the roughly 95 properties listed by our booking partner returned rates for each set of dates. Some of that gap is properties that had not yet released February rates rather than sell-outs; either way, most guests find the real constraint is choice, not price. February is the peak of whale season in southern Baja. Visit Los Cabos describes January to March as peak season, with February offering the highest likelihood of close encounters, and notes that Pacific-side beaches between Cabo and Todos Santos often deliver sightings directly from the sand in January and February. In practice, that means binoculars and an early start from the bluff at Punta Lobos or the beach at La Pastora give you a good chance of spouts, tail slaps, or a breach offshore, though sightings from land are never guaranteed.

For close encounters, the boat tours leave from Cabo San Lucas. In our view, February is the single best month to give one morning to a Cabo whale cruise: activity is at its peak, and humpback mothers with calves are a common sight. Gray whales are also migrating along this coast in February, heading to and from Baja's Pacific lagoons.

February is also prime time for the gray whale calving lagoons farther up the Pacific coast, where mothers and calves famously approach small boats. Magdalena Bay is the nearest, but it is several hours' drive north of Todos Santos, so we'd only do this if you're happy to make it an overnight trip or a very long day. For most visitors, humpbacks from shore plus one Cabo cruise is the better use of time.

February's main downside is the ocean: some of the coldest water of the year meets the same powerful winter shore break as January. Neither ruins a trip, but both change what a beach day looks like.

Where You Can and Can't Swim

• Punta Lobos, La Cachora, La Pastora, and the long beaches near town: heavy shore break, steep drop-offs, and strong currents. Beautiful for walking, whale-spotting, and sunsets; not for swimming. Drownings do happen on this coast, so take the warnings seriously.
• Playa Los Cerritos (about 15 minutes south): the most forgiving beach in the area, with a sandy bottom and a sheltered point. It is the standard beginner surf beach in winter and the best bet for a quick dip on calmer days.
• Playa Las Palmas (San Pedrito): a palm-backed cove that can be calm enough to wade on small days, but exposed to winter swells; check conditions first.

Surfing in February

February sits inside the main winter surf season for Cerritos, roughly November to March, when northwest swells arrive consistently (see the Cerritos surf statistics for month-by-month swell data). With the water averaging around 19°C, a full 3/2 wetsuit is the norm, and some surfers go thicker on cold mornings. Where to Find Calm Water

Snorkeling isn't really an option on this side of the peninsula in February. For calm, clear water, head to the Sea of Cortez: Cabo's snorkel bays, or Playa Balandra near La Paz, about an hour north. None of this is storm-related; the eastern Pacific hurricane season runs May 15 to November 30, so February carries no hurricane risk.

What we'd prioritise in February

Whales come first. We'd book this for the first clear morning of your trip: a Cabo whale cruise, then the drive back north with a stop at the Migriño ATV trails or the zipline canyon. On the other mornings, take coffee and binoculars to Punta Lobos or La Pastora and watch from shore; February is the month when that is most rewarding.

In town, the galleries, the mission church, the historic Teatro Márquez de León, and the famous Hotel California are all within a few walkable blocks, and February is the height of the winter arts season. Surfers should plan dawn sessions at Cerritos before the afternoon breeze. • Carnaval La Paz: one of Mexico's best-known carnivals fills the La Paz malecón with parades, music, and food stalls from February 4 to 9, 2027. It's an easy evening trip from Todos Santos; plan a designated driver or stay the night, since the highway is dark.
• Winter theater at Teatro Márquez de León: in recent years the local Palapa Society has staged plays at the town's historic theater in mid-to-late February. Check the Palapa Society events page for the 2027 program.
• Punta Lobos fishing pangas: the local fleet launches and lands its boats through the surf just south of town, and the bluff above is one of the best whale lookouts on the coast.
• Valentine's dinner in El Pescadero: the farm-to-table restaurants between Todos Santos and Cerritos make February's cool evenings feel special; reserve early for the 14th.

• Book your room before anything else. Availability was thin in our sample and February ran a little pricier than January, so lock in lodging first, especially for Presidents' Day weekend.
• Reserve Valentine's dinner early. The best restaurants in Todos Santos and El Pescadero are small, and February 14 falls on a Sunday in 2027, the middle of the busiest weekend.
• Pack for cold water. At around 19°C, February water calls for a full 3/2 wetsuit for surfing; lesson schools provide boards and can arrange wetsuits with notice.
• Bring binoculars. Shore whale-spotting is at its best in February, and a decent pair turns distant spouts into breaches you can actually see.
• Rent a car. Cerritos, Punta Lobos, La Paz, and every Cabo tour departure need wheels, and most Cabo tour pickups cover Cabo San Lucas and Tourist Corridor hotels rather than Todos Santos.
• Pick later whale-cruise departures. A 9 AM or later start from Cabo San Lucas avoids a pre-dawn drive, and February mornings are usually calm.
• Treat the beaches with respect. Most beaches near town are unswimmable; swim only at Cerritos on calm days, and never alone.
• Carry pesos. Smaller shops, taco stands, and beach parking often take cash only.
