San José del Cabo is the quieter, older half of Los Cabos: a mission town with a Thursday-night Art Walk, a food scene built around its market, and whale boats that leave without the Cabo San Lucas crowds. Here are the eight experiences worth booking and the ones that cost nothing.
What You Should Know
- San José del Cabo is the historic town at the airport end of Los Cabos: a mission founded in 1730, a gallery district on Calle Obregón and a river estuary, with a slower pace than Cabo San Lucas.
- The best of the town happens in the evening: the history walk starts at 6:00pm, and the free Art Walk runs on Thursday nights from November to June; days are better spent on the water or out of town.
- Bookable experiences run from $45 for an 80 to 90 minute history walk to $279 for a Cabo Pulmo snorkel day; food tours and the cooking class are priced in pesos, so the dollar figure moves with the exchange rate.
- Several of the best things to do here are seasonal: whale boats run December to April, the Art Walk November to June, and the Costa Azul surf lesson has no dates from mid-November to mid-March.
Best Things to Do in San José del Cabo: What to Book and What to Walk To
The best things to do in San José del Cabo split cleanly in two. The old town itself (the mission church, Plaza Mijares, the gallery streets and the estuary) costs nothing and is best explored on foot in the late afternoon. The San José del Cabo tours worth paying for are the ones that add a person or a boat: a local historian, a food guide who knows which taco stands to trust, a whale boat that leaves from the town's own marina, or a driver to the waterfalls and reefs you could not reach alone.
| If you want | Do this |
|---|---|
| The first thing to book | The historic and cultural walking tour, 6:00pm, $45 |
| The best free evening | The Art Walk on Calle Obregón, Thursdays from November to June |
| The best food experience | A food and market tour from the plaza, about $75 (priced in pesos) |
| The best wildlife | Small-boat whale watching from San José, December to April, $120 |
| The best adventure close to town | The Costa Azul ziplines, 10 minutes away, from $76 |
| The best day out | Fox Canyon waterfall hike ($165) or the Cabo Pulmo reef ($279) |
San José sits at the eastern end of the Tourist Corridor, 10 to 20 minutes from Los Cabos International Airport according to our airport transfer guide, with Cabo San Lucas at the other end of the Corridor. Most of the famous Cabo boat trips (the Arch, Lovers Beach, the party cruises) leave from the Cabo San Lucas marina, so they appear in our best things to do in Cabo San Lucas guide rather than here. This page covers the San José del Cabo activities in town, or easiest to reach from it.
We have compared eight bookable experiences below, chosen to cover different parts of a stay rather than eight versions of the same tour. If you have not chosen a base yet, our best hotels in San José del Cabo and San José del Cabo all-inclusive resorts guides rank where to stay.
Cabo City Tours: Historical and Cultural Walking Tour of San José del Cabo
We chose it for a 5.0 rating from 614 reviews (596 of them five stars), the lowest price of the eight at $45, and because it is the one experience on the list that is about San José itself: its mission, its plaza and the people who built the town. It starts at 6:00pm, when the light is best and the heat has gone.
Book NowSan José del Cabo Tours: 8 Experiences Compared
San José del Cabo at a glance: the eight experiences below run from $45 for an 80 to 90 minute history walk to $279 for a full day snorkeling at Cabo Pulmo. Five of them start in San José itself or within about 10 minutes of it; the other three are San José del Cabo excursions that include transport from San José hotels.
Should you book tours in San José del Cabo?
Book a guide for the history and the food, which you would otherwise only see from the outside, and anything that needs a boat or a long drive: whales, Fox Canyon and Cabo Pulmo.
Skip the tour for the plaza, the mission, the estuary and the Thursday Art Walk. They are free, compact and better at your own pace.
How we ranked them: by review score and volume, how recently guests have reviewed them, what you get for the price, and how well each one covers a different side of San José.

ℹ️ Every price, rating, review count, duration, start time and age band above was checked against live operator listings on October 30, 2026, and each tour was bookable on sample dates between November 2026 and March 2027 (the surf lesson from March 2027). Peso prices are converted at that day's rate (18.83 MXN to the dollar), so the dollar figure moves with the exchange rate. The zipline park fee is not in the listing; guests in 2024 and 2026 report $15 per person in cash. Prices are per person and may change, so always confirm with the operator before booking.
A First Day in San José del Cabo That Works
- 019:00am
Whales, surf or ziplines
Whale boats and surf lessons both have 9:00am slots, and the zipline is cooler on the first run of the day.
- 02Noon
The market and lunch
The Municipal Market for tacos and fresh juice, or a morning food tour that replaces lunch.
- 032:00pm
Rest out of the heat
The middle of the afternoon is the hottest part of the day for walking; a pool or the beach is the better plan.
- 045:00pm
The estuary edge and the galleries
Walk the edge of the estuary toward the old town, then the galleries on Calle Obregón.
- 056:00pm
The history walk
Eighty to 90 minutes through the plaza, the mission and the Art District as the light goes. On Thursdays, the Art Walk instead.
- 068:00pm
Dinner in the historic centre
Several guests on the history walk go straight to dinner in the old town afterwards.
- 01
Whales, surf or ziplines
Whale boats and surf lessons both have 9:00am slots, and the zipline is cooler on the first run of the day.
9:00am - Noon02
The market and lunch
The Municipal Market for tacos and fresh juice, or a morning food tour that replaces lunch.
- 03
Rest out of the heat
The middle of the afternoon is the hottest part of the day for walking; a pool or the beach is the better plan.
2:00pm - 5:00pm04
The estuary edge and the galleries
Walk the edge of the estuary toward the old town, then the galleries on Calle Obregón.
- 05
The history walk
Eighty to 90 minutes through the plaza, the mission and the Art District as the light goes. On Thursdays, the Art Walk instead.
6:00pm - 8:00pm06
Dinner in the historic centre
Several guests on the history walk go straight to dinner in the old town afterwards.
Order matters more than the list. Mornings are best on the water, middays are hot, and the town comes alive after about 5:00pm: San José del Cabo at night means the plaza, dinner in the old town and, on Thursdays from November to June, the Art Walk.
The 8 Best San José del Cabo Tours, Ranked
Ranked by how confidently we would recommend each one for a first visit to San José. The first three are about the town itself; the rest use San José as a base for the sea, the hills and the reef.
Historical and Cultural Walking Tour
An 80 to 90 minute evening walk through the historic centre: the geology of the peninsula, the Pericú people, the mission founded in 1730, the plaza and the town's legends. It is rated 5.0 from 614 reviews, 596 of them five stars, and the fee funds free tours for local schools. Guests describe a guide who talks openly about the town's rougher history and present-day problems, which is the point of it; a few older reviews say the tour was designed for new residents rather than tourists, and you should not expect tastings. It stays outdoors: the listing says the group does not go inside the church or into the estuary, and one March 2026 guest wished they could have entered some of the buildings. It does not run on Thursdays, so pair it with the Art Walk on another night. Bring insect repellent, which the listing asks for.
Check availabilityFood and Market Tour
Three hours of eating with Eating With Carmen: aguas frescas, enchiladas in mole, birria, sopes with carnitas, the market and tacos, with every dish and the restaurant tips included. It is rated 4.9 from 208 reviews. The stops are in everyday neighbourhoods rather than the gallery streets, and the sidewalks are narrow, uneven and often uphill; summer guests describe struggling with the heat, and one guide ordered an Uber for a guest who could not manage the walk. We'd book the 10:00am slot from May to October. For an alternative, Juan More Taco Tours' morning taco tour costs about $80 (1,499 MXN, converted at the same rate) and is rated 4.9 from 323 reviews.
Check availabilityCooking Class and Local Markets
Five hours with a chef: shopping in the Municipal Market, a stop at a tortilla factory, then cooking and eating a full Mexican menu in a small upstairs kitchen, with margaritas. It is rated 5.0 from 270 reviews, 265 of them five stars. The trade-off is time: several guests found five hours long, with about 20 minutes in traffic between the market and the tortilla factory. The class is in San José, so if you are staying in Cabo San Lucas, plan your own transport. We'd book it for a long, sociable day if you want to take recipes home; if you mainly want to eat well, the three-hour food tour covers more of the town for less.
Check availabilityWhale Watching from San José
A 2 hour 15 minute small-boat trip from the San José fishing-charter marina, with up to eight per booking. One January 2026 guest compared it with a Cabo San Lucas trip on a boat of 22 and preferred this one, a short ride from a Corridor resort with two guests on board; others describe breaching calves and leaping devil rays. Sightings are not guaranteed, and one guest describes a quiet first hour. It has 42 reviews, all but one five stars, but that perfect score rests on a far smaller sample than the 140 to 621 reviews behind the other seven, so it is the least proven rating on this page. If you are staying in San José, we'd give this the edge over a Cabo San Lucas boat: the short ride to the marina and the small group matter more on a two-hour trip than the Arch in the background.
Check availabilitySurf Lesson at Costa Azul
Two hours at Costa Azul, the surf beach just west of San José, with boards, rash guards, shade and transport from selected areas. It is rated 5.0 from 482 reviews, and guests describe teenagers standing within minutes. But it is a summer break: the listing has no dates between November 16, 2026 and March 14, 2027, and several summer guests say the waves broke close to shore and were too big for a complete beginner. We'd book it from March to November if you can swim confidently.
Check availabilityCosta Azul Ziplines
Seven ziplines, a rappel and a suspension bridge in the hills about 10 minutes from San José, with a tequila tasting. It is rated 4.9 from 621 reviews and is on sale at $76 until December, then $95. Expect uphill hiking between the lines, little shade in the afternoon, a cash park fee on arrival ($15 per person in 2024 and 2026 reviews), and no phones on the course, with a photo package for sale. Cruise passengers should note the shuttle runs on Cabo time and does not wait.
Check availabilityFox Canyon Waterfall Hike
A six-hour day to Fox Canyon (Cañón de la Zorra) in the Santiago area, about 1.5 hours from San José: roughly 3 km of rocky trail, a swim in the pool below the waterfall, entry and lunch included, and a stop at the Tropic of Cancer. It is rated 5.0 from 410 reviews, including an 85-year-old guest who managed with the guide's help. The trade-off is the drive, which one guest found took most of the day, and swimming depends on recent rain. It costs $165 until December 31, then $175.
Check availabilityCabo Pulmo National Park
A 10-hour trip to Cabo Pulmo on the East Cape, the protected reef with the best snorkeling near Los Cabos, with lunch. It is rated 4.7 from 140 reviews, and sea turtles come up often. Guests describe a dirt road at the end of the drive, basic facilities and about an hour in the water, which rough seas can cut short: one July 2026 guest got less than an hour of choppy, murky water on a 10-hour day, and a March 2026 guest waited nearly an hour after arriving before boarding. Park entrance is paid on the day, and the age range is 12 to 60. We'd book it only if snorkeling is the main event of your trip, and ask the operator about sea conditions the day before. Our day trips guide compares it with La Paz and Todos Santos.
Check availabilityIf you only book one thing in San José, book the history walk on your first evening; everything else in town makes more sense afterwards. If you only book one thing out of town, choose by season: whales from December to April, surf and Fox Canyon the rest of the year.
15 Things to Do in San José del Cabo, Free and Bookable
The eight experiences above are the bookable ones we could compare and verify. They are not the whole town. This is the wider list, not 15 more experiences: it folds those eight tours in alongside the free sights and the places nearby, grouped by whether they cost anything.
Free Things to Do in San José del Cabo
- The Art Walk. On Thursday evenings from November to June, the galleries on and around Calle Obregón stay open from 5:00pm to 9:00pm, often with the artists on hand. It is free. The 2026 to 2027 start date had not been announced when we checked, so confirm it locally in early November.
- Plaza Mijares and the mission church. The town square and the mission church that gives San José its history; the mission was founded in 1730. Go at dusk, when the plaza fills up.
- San José del Cabo downtown on foot. The historic centre: the streets between the plaza, Calle Obregón and Miguel Hidalgo hold most of the galleries, restaurants and colonial buildings, all within a few minutes' walk.
- The San José estuary. A freshwater estuary where the river meets the sea, between the hotel zone and the old town, with palms and resident and migratory birds. Walk the edge in the early morning.
- The Municipal Market. The Mercado Municipal is where the cooking class starts; come in the morning, before the heat.
How long to allow for each, and when to go. The times are our estimates for an unhurried visit, not fixed opening hours.
| Free attraction | Time to allow | Best time | Why then |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plaza Mijares | 20 to 30 min | Evening | The plaza fills up at dusk |
| The mission church | 15 to 20 min | Late afternoon | On the plaza, so it pairs with the evening there |
| The Art District (Calle Obregón) | 45 to 90 min | Thursday evening, November to June | The Art Walk runs from 5:00pm to 9:00pm |
| The San José estuary | 30 to 60 min | Early morning | Cooler air, and the birds are active |
| The Municipal Market | 30 to 45 min | Morning | Before the midday heat |
Bookable, and worth it
- The history walk ($45), our top pick above.
- A food or taco tour (about $75 to $80, converted from peso prices). Our Cabo food tour guide compares more.
- A cooking class ($129). See the Cabo cooking class guide for classes in Cabo San Lucas too.
- Whale watching from December to April ($120). Our Cabo whale watching guide covers the bigger boats from Cabo San Lucas.
- A surf lesson at Costa Azul ($50 to $60, March to mid-November). Our surf lessons guide also covers Cerritos on the Pacific side.
- Ziplining in the Costa Azul hills ($76 to $95). The Cabo zipline guide compares every course.
Things to Do Near San José del Cabo
- Snorkel Santa María and Chileno bays in the Corridor, about 21 to 27 minutes' drive from San José. Our Chileno Bay and Santa Maria Bay snorkeling guide compares the two; see also our Cabo snorkeling guide and the 2 Bays kayak tour in our Cabo kayak guide, which includes transport from San José hotels.
- Fox Canyon and the Santiago waterfalls ($165), above.
- Cabo Pulmo ($279), above, or one of the longer days in our best day trips from Cabo guide.
- A sunset turtle release from late July to early January. Both bookable releases are on the Pacific side; our Cabo turtle release guide explains which one offers hotel pickup.
San José del Cabo Beaches: Where to Walk, Surf and Snorkel
The San José del Cabo beaches in town face open water, and several of the hotel beaches are not swimmable. For calm water, most visitors drive into the Corridor. Drive times are from San José, measured without traffic.
| Beach | Where | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playa Hotelera | In front of the San José hotel zone, between the estuary and Costa Azul | Long walks and sunrise | Often not safe for swimming; ask your hotel about conditions |
| Costa Azul | Just west of town, at the start of the Corridor | Surfing and surf lessons | Summer waves can be big for complete beginners |
| Chileno Bay | The Corridor, 19.4 km (about 21 min) | Snorkeling and swimming | Public access with facilities |
| Santa María Bay | The Corridor, 23.9 km (about 27 min) | Snorkeling | Fewer facilities; bring water and shade |
Conditions at both bays change with the swell, so neither is reliably the calmer one. Our Chileno and Santa Maria snorkeling guide covers them in detail.
Map: San José del Cabo Sights and Tour Meeting Points
The historic centre, the estuary and the marina are all within a short taxi ride of each other. The cooking class meets at the Municipal Market; the zipline, Fox Canyon and Cabo Pulmo are out of town and include transport, so they are not pinned.
Things to Do in San José del Cabo with Kids
Most of the eight experiences take children, but the age limits vary more than the prices suggest. Here is how they sort by age, with the child price where the operator sets one.
| Ages | Experience | Child price | Why it works, or does not |
|---|---|---|---|
| Any age | Historic walking tour | $30 ages 11 to 18; $5 or less under 11 | Wheelchair and stroller friendly, and over in 80 to 90 minutes |
| Any age | Food and market tour | $70 ages 5 to 11; under 5 free | Uneven, often uphill sidewalks; not suited to strollers in the midday heat |
| 6 and up | Cooking class | $80 ages 6 to 12 | Hands-on, but five hours is long for younger children |
| 6 and up | Surf lesson at Costa Azul | Same as adults | March to mid-November only, for confident swimmers |
| 6 and up | Fox Canyon waterfall hike | Same as adults | About 3 km of rocky trail and a long drive |
| 7 and up | Whale watching | Same as adults | December to April; ages 7 to 75 |
| 7 and up | Ziplines | $60 on sale, $75 regular | Uphill hiking between lines |
| 12 and up | Cabo Pulmo snorkel | Same as adults | Ages 12 to 60, and a 10-hour day |
Our picks by age: with young children or a stroller, the history walk and the free plaza, estuary and market are the easy wins. From age 7, whale watching in season is the best wildlife morning, with the same price for every age. For teenagers, we'd book the ziplines or the Fox Canyon hike, which give them something physical after a day of walking the old town.
San José del Cabo or Cabo San Lucas for Things to Do?
Los Cabos has two towns at opposite ends of the Corridor, and most visitors end up doing things in both. The difference is not quality but kind.
| San José del Cabo | Cabo San Lucas | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | History, galleries, food, quieter evenings | Boat trips to the Arch, beaches, nightlife |
| Signature free activity | The Thursday Art Walk (November to June) | Walking the marina and Medano Beach |
| Whale watching | Small boats from the San José marina | More boats and bigger ones, with the Arch as a backdrop |
| Where tours leave from | The plaza, the market and the fishing marina | The marina, for almost every boat tour |
| Getting there from the airport | 10 to 20 minutes | About 40 to 55 minutes |
In practice, a San José base works best if you would rather spend your evenings in a walkable old town than in bars, and do not mind a ride along the Corridor for the Arch and the Cabo San Lucas boats. The airport times come from our Los Cabos airport transfer guide.
When to Do What in San José del Cabo
Three of the best things to do in San José del Cabo are seasonal, and their seasons do not line up, so the month you visit changes the list.
The Thursday Art Walk runs from November to June. Outside it, the galleries are still open in the day, but the street party is not.
Humpbacks are off Los Cabos and the San José whale boats run. The cooler, drier months are also the easiest for the history walk and food tours.
The Costa Azul surf lesson has no dates from mid-November to mid-March. Summer brings the biggest waves, and the hottest days for walking tours.
For the most on the list at once, we would aim for December to April: whales, the Art Walk and comfortable walking weather all overlap. For month-by-month weather, see our Cabo in January guide and the other monthly guides.
What a Day in San José del Cabo Costs
The gap between a cheap and an expensive day in San José is almost entirely about whether you leave town. Four realistic days, per person.
The free day
$0 plus food. The plaza, the mission, the estuary edge, the market and, on Thursdays from November to June, the Art Walk.
The town day
About $120. The $45 history walk and a $75 food tour that replaces lunch, with the galleries and the plaza for free.
The active day
About $200 to $240. Whale watching at $120 in season, or a surf lesson at $50 to $60, plus the zipline at $76 to $95 and its cash park fee.
The day out
$165 to $279. Fox Canyon with lunch and entry included, or Cabo Pulmo with lunch plus park entrance on the day.
Our Take
The pattern we keep seeing in San José reviews is that the town rewards evenings and punishes middays: guests on the 6:00pm history walk describe golden light and cool air, while the complaints on the food tour and the zipline are mostly about heat. Plan the walking for late afternoon and put the water in the morning.
Tips for San José del Cabo
- Do the history walk first. Several guests say it changed how they saw the rest of the town, and it is the cheapest experience on this page.
- Save Thursday for the Art Walk. The history walk does not run on Thursdays, and the Art Walk only runs on Thursdays, so the two fit together.
- Avoid the Art Walk tour if galleries are the point. A bookable afternoon sold as an Art Walk tour mostly visits a pearl shop, a chocolate maker and a brewery, and several recent guests say they never went into a gallery. The Art Walk itself is free.
- Take the morning food tour in summer. Guests on the afternoon slot describe heat and steep, uneven sidewalks between stops.
- Bring cash for the zipline. The park fee is paid in cash on arrival and there is no ATM on site, according to the listing.
- Book whales early in your trip. Sightings are never guaranteed, so leave room to go again.
- Check the sea before Cabo Pulmo. Most of its low ratings in 2025 and 2026 describe rough or murky water and less than an hour of snorkeling after a long drive. Message the operator the day before and move the date if the forecast is poor.
- Know which beaches are for swimming. Several San José hotel beaches are not swimmable; for calm water go to Santa María or Chileno in the Corridor.
- Staying overnight before an early flight? Our hotels near Los Cabos airport guide covers the terminal hotels.

How We Chose These Experiences
We started from the 255 tours listed for San José del Cabo by the booking platform's partner API, sorted by traveller rating and by default ranking. Many are Cabo San Lucas boat trips or Pacific-side ranch tours tagged with San José, so we kept only those that start in San José, within about 10 minutes of it, or that include transport from San José hotels to somewhere you cannot reach easily from Cabo San Lucas.
We then ran a review-recency check on every candidate. We left out the most-reviewed San José whale boat and a sunrise whale trip from the same company, whose newest reviews were from April and March 2026; that reflects the end of the whale season rather than a problem, but it is our rule, and we will look at them again once the season starts. We left out an ocean safari from the San José marina for the same reason. The whale boat we kept has only 42 reviews, so its 5.0 carries less weight than the other ratings here. We also left out a bookable Art Walk tour because several recent guests say it skips the galleries, and the ATV and e-bike tours tagged with San José because they run from a ranch on the Pacific side.
Every price, rating, review count, duration and age band came from the partner API on October 30, 2026, and each of the eight was bookable on sample dates. We read about 270 recent and low-rated guest reviews across eight listings, plus the 150 most recent reviews of our top pick; the heat on the food tour, the waves at Costa Azul, the zipline park fee and the drive to Fox Canyon are guest reports, not listing claims. The Art Walk hours and season come from local news coverage, and the 1730 mission date from published histories of the mission.
We have not taken these tours ourselves, and nothing here is written as though we had. Booking links are affiliate links and we may earn a commission if you book through them, at no extra cost to you. No operator paid for inclusion or position.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best things to do in San José del Cabo?+
Walk the historic centre (the plaza, the mission and the galleries on Calle Obregón), ideally on the 6:00pm history walk, and go to the free Art Walk on a Thursday between November and June. Beyond the town, the best San José del Cabo tours are a food tour, small-boat whale watching from December to April, the Costa Azul ziplines and a day trip to the Fox Canyon waterfall or the Cabo Pulmo reef.
When is the San José del Cabo Art Walk?+
Thursday evenings from 5:00pm to 9:00pm, from November to June, in the gallery district around Calle Obregón and Plaza Mijares. It is free. The start date for each season is announced locally, so confirm it in early November.
Can you go whale watching from San José del Cabo?+
